Why Every Woman Should Buy a Concealer 5 Shades Darker Than Their Skin Tone

Looking for a soft dewey look? It all starts with a good smoky eye—but not in the way you’d expect. Instead of using powder eye shadows, Mario opts for cream concealers that are 5 to 6 shades darker than his clients’ skin tone. The reasoning is that it appears more natural when applied and offers a “second skin” effect to the look.
“It’s the most natural, beautiful smoky eye a person can have—it looks like skin, but just darker skin,” says Mario. “You can blend it with a brush or with your fingers. It acts like an eyeshadow base but also gives you that pigment and depth to the eye for a smokier look,” he continues.

While Mario says you can certainly leave the look as is once the concealer has been applied, you can also add some powdered eye shadow on top of it if you’re looking for texture or a more dramatic finish. However, if you want to err on the side of a dewy makeup look, Mario recommends skipping the powder altogether and adding a $5 drugstore staple to your skin instead:
“Tap on a petroleum jelly-based product, like Vaseline, onto the cheekbones and center of the eyes over the dark concealer to add a gorgeous, dewy glow to your look,” explained Mario. While this technique usually needs more touch ups than usual (the product rubs off easily), it’s the easiest way to get that subtle, balmy shine without having to spend too much time doing your makeup.
