3 Exercises High Heel Lovers Should Do to Avoid Foot Pain

Add these podiatrist-recommended moves to your workout to ward off the not-so-sexy side effects of heels.

Anyone who’s ever squeezed into a pair of sky-high shoes knows heels can be hell on your feet. But the problems may not stop there. Wearing heels regularly can also affect your leg muscles over time, says podiatrist Bobby Pourziaee, a Los Angeles-based foot and ankle surgeon and the founder of the Spa on Rodeo. When you’re walking on tiptoes, your calf muscles are shortened—“and they can stay that way if heels are the only shoes you wear,” he explains.

New Years Eve Makeup: From Drab to Fab in 15 Minutes

Like many nail polish lovers, I rarely wear makeup, New Years Eve is an exception. It’s the biggest party of the year, so it’s obligatory to look fabulous! How To Stop Biting Nails – The SoNailicious Way

A few months ago, a reader asked me if I had any tips on how to stop biting nails. As a reformed nail biter, a rush of memories flooded my mind. Although I could bite my nails so neat and straight you’d never guess it wasn’t scissors, the downside was short, damaged nails. Of course, I tried hard to overcome the habit. There were endless treatments, parental punishment and flak from my friends but nothing worked. Until one day, I had an epiphany and I decided to end this habit once and for all.

Going Gray in Your 20s? This Is Probably Why

Some of the causes of gray hair have nothing to do with your genes

Hate to break it to you, but some day, you're going to start sprouting white hairs (that is, if you haven't already). 7 Surprising Foods to Combat Colds
Runny nose, congestion, sore throat, sneezing. Yep, sounds like it could be a cold. While cold symptoms vary (and can also include headaches and fever), all colds are respiratory infections caused by more than 200 possible viruses. With so many viruses waiting to take hold, another way of thinking of it is that a cold is caused by a weak immune system that allows the virus to set in. “There’s no magic superfood for combatting the common cold. However, there are numerous foods and nutrients that can play helpful roles in prevention or treatment of it. This lends support to the popular nutrition approach of enjoying a variety of foods,” says Jackie Newgent, RDN, chef, nutritionist and author of “The With or Without Meat Cookbook.” From sardines to mushrooms to wine -- try including a variety of these seven foods in your diet to maintain (or regain) a healthy immune system.

You May Need to Replace Your Sunglasses More Often Than You Think

Are your sunglasses protecting your eyes from damaging UV rays? If you have had your current shades for a while, the UV protection may be fading, researchers say.

Even if you love your current sunglasses, you still might need a new pair of shades. It seems sunglasses’ UV protection may deteriorate over time, and current industry tests are not sufficient for determining how long it’s safe to wear them, according to a study from Brazil.
Most Brazilians wear the same pair every day for about two years, the study notes, yet it has not been proven that lenses maintain the same level of protection after that type of exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The findings may have implications for the sunglass industry in the United States, as well. There is no current recommendation for when, exactly, people should retire their old pairs—and protecting eyes from the sun is important anywhere in the world, as UV exposure can lead to cataracts, retina damage, and other long-term eye problems and vision loss.

Black is Back!

Black is back and it’s hotter than ever. You can wear it on your lips, nails or both. I’ve been a fan of black lips ever since I started wearing makeup. I even recall using black pencil to get the black lip look that matched my black nails when I was in high school and then getting detention for “inappropriate behavior”. Alas, my teachers could not foresee that 20 years later, black lipstick would return.

Can Cleansing Conditioner Really Cause Hair Loss?

As a $26 million settlement over Wen hair products moves forward, we asked dermatologists to weigh in on the safety of cleansing conditioners in general.

Last year, a group of 200 women in 40 states filed a class action lawsuit alleging the cleansing conditioner from Wen by Chaz Dean caused scary side effects, from scalp irritation to hair loss.

This past Monday, a federal judge in Los Angeles gave preliminary approval to a $26.3 million settlement for the suit against celebrity stylist Chaz Dean and Wen distributor Guthy-Renker. If approved by a United States district judge, customers who had adverse reactions could receive up to $20,000.

Those Facebook Bullies May Be Boosting Your Risk of Depression

Social media attacks have 'real emotional consequences,' researchers say

THURSDAY, Sept. 15, 2016 (HealthDay News)—Negative experiences on Facebook can increase the odds of depression in young people, a new study found.
"It's important that people take interactions on social media seriously and don't think of it as somehow less impactful because it's a virtual experience as opposed to an in-person experience," said study author Samantha Rosenthal. She is an epidemiology research associate at Brown University's School of Public Health in Providence, R.I.

A new report sheds light on how your daily trek to work can affect your waistline, stress levels, and more.

Getting from your home to your office and back again is a major part of daily life, but the act of commuting may be even more important than we realize. According to a new report, longer commutes may be detrimental to your health.

Another Good Reason to Work Up a Sweat

New research indicates a hormone released during exercise actually stops new fat cells from forming.

Exercise does more than just tone muscle and burn calories in the moment: New research shows that a hormone released during exercise actually helps the body shed fat and keep it off.
The hormone, called irisin, has been shown to play a role in transforming energy-storing white fat cells into energy-burning brown fat cells—a process scientists call “browning.” Now, University of Florida scientists say that irisinhelps inhibit the formation of new fatty tissue, as well.
These findings highlight a new and additional benefit of physical activity, said co-author Li-Jun Yang, MD, a professor of hematopathology in the University of Florida College of Medicine, in a press release, because irisin levels are believed to surge when the heart and other muscles are exerted. (In addition to exercise, studies show that shivering can trigger irisin production, as well.)

Most of us, however, can find 10 minutes a day in a quiet place to practice a few of them. In fact, even 10 minutes a day can help you reap the benefits of yoga, including increased strength and flexibility, more energy, improved respiration, enhanced cardiovascular and circulatory health, improved sports performance, injury prevention and lower stress levels. You can always progress to include more and different poses in your practice, but start by doing these 11 essential poses, and then add to your asana arsenal as time and your body allow.

Your nails may break after they reach a certain length because they lack moisture or are too weak to grow any longer. If your nails are opaque in color, pitted or curl at the ends, consult a doctor-- your symptoms may be the sign of a vitamin deficiency or illness. Otherwise, you can strengthen your nails at home if your doctor approves. Toss those acrylic fingernails and grow your own strong and healthy nails.

How to Make Your Hair Super Shiny When You're Air-Drying

You don't have to settle for a lackluster air dry thanks to these stylist-suggested tips.

I’m on the following life kicks: attempting to cook, lifting weights, arranging flowers (don’t ask), and almost exclusively air-drying my hair. The latter is mostly because I don’t feel like standing in a steamy locker room post-workout and sweating it out under a blow-dryer, and also just because I like sleep. The lack of heat tools in my routine has actually taught me to embrace and enjoy my natural texture, but I’m not going to lie, I miss the super shine that comes with an indulgent, cuticle-sealing blowout.

Here’s New Proof That Not All Fats Are Bad For You

Eating fat is not bad for your health if you’re opting for the right kinds, a new study suggests.

In the new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers looked at the diets of about 126,000 people who were enrolled in two large studies and followed for up to 32 years. The researchers documented the types of fat people ate at the start of the study every two to four years after that.

Recent science has been showing that the standard advice to avoid fat may be misguided, and while there’s still some debate over how healthy certain fats are compared to others, the picture is becoming more clear. The new study added to that knowledge, finding that eating more polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids was linked to a lower risk of death, while eating more trans fat and saturated fat was associated with a higher risk of death. Compared to overall carbohydrate consumption, eating more saturated fat was linked to a small increase in total mortality, but was not linked to a higher risk of death from heart disease.

Weight Loss and Water Consumption Appear to Be Linked

Researchers are not sure why, but another study links low water consumption to obesity

The average American doesn’t drink nearly enough water—only 4 cups a day, by some estimates. At the same, high obesity rates here have barely budged, despite a continued focus on diet and physical activity.

Some researchers don’t think that’s a coincidence. “There’s so much focus on food and exercise, but so much more than just food and exercise goes into weight,” says Dr. Tammy Chang, assistant professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Michigan medical school.

Could the amount of water people drink have any link to their weight? In a new study published in theAnnals of Family Medicine, Chang and her colleagues wanted to find out, so they used recent data from about 9,500 adults enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey (NHANES), a nationally representative sample of what Americans are eating. The data also included information about how hydrated they were, measured by the concentration of people’s urine.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dead Skin Cells

Skin, the body’s largest organ, constantly sloughs off dead cells. This gives way to new, living cells that move up from the lower layers. This continual renewal keeps the skin looking younger, smoother and more radiant.
With age, this natural skin cycle slows down, which can result in an accumulation of dead skin cells on the outer skin layer.
This buildup makes your skin appear dull and darker, and leads to blemishes and more fine lines.
