BEAUTYSCHOOL: HOW TO CONTOUR & HIGHLIGHT DARK SKIN TONES

Rihanna's makeup artist shares her tips.

Question: How do I choose the right shade of highlighter and contour cream for my dark complexion?
Answer: According to makeup artist and owner of Melt Cosmetics Lora Arellano, whose clients include Rihanna, Serena Williams and Viola Davis, the trickiest part of getting theperfect highlight and contour on dark skin is finding the right base color. "The most important thing to look at is the undertone of the complexion. Some darker skin tones have a red undertone; some have more of an olive undertone. If you are red/pink, you'll benefit from a highlight with a hint of silver color; if you are olive, look for a golden-based one." When choosing a contour product, look for one in the same tone family as your foundation, but one to two shades darker than your skin. One caveat: If your skin is very dark—think Alek Wek—skip contour and sculpt your face with highlighter that's two to three shades lighter, adding a bit under the eyes, down the bridge of the nose, under the brows and above and under the cheekbones. "Just stay away from using anything white," warns Arellano. "If the color is looking too pasty, mix foundation in and blend well." She loves Giorgio Armani Maestro Liquid Summer and Tom Ford Liquid Skin Illuminator, and one BAZAAR editor swears byMake Up For Ever Sculpting Kit in Dark
