BEAUTYSCHOOL: TWO WAYS TO GET RID OF BLACKHEADS

Dermatologist-approved remedies for the most stubborn skin problem.

Question: Why do I get blackheads on my nose and cheeks, and how do I get rid of them aside from extractions?
Answer: If it's any comfort, according to dermatologist Dr. Macrene Alexiadesblackheads are an issue for most of us, so you're hardly alone in the struggle to banish them for good. They're caused when the sebum in your pores gets exposed to oxygen—the oxidation reaction turns the oil from white to black. Retinol can work really well if you tolerate it (and if you think you don't, try following the retinoid rules for sensitive skin), says Dr. Macrene, because "it actually decreases the stickiness of cells, so it works to slowly close those pores down and prevent them from filling with sebum." Another fix is to use peeling agents like glycolic acid and salicylic acid (Dr. Macrene recommends AcneFree's toning and unclogging pads) on a regular basis to exfoliate and dry out overly viscous pores. With both retinoids and acids, you'll want to start out using them only a couple of times per week to avoid redness or flaking while your skin adjusts, and always in the evening.
