The untold truth of Adam Sandler

Love him or hate him, there's no denying that Adam Sandler has had a considerable impact on the shape of comedy today. You know him from his early days on Saturday Night Live, his oft-repeated songs, and movies that have had up-and-down responses from critics and audiences alike. So, what's really going on behind that goofy — and sometimes frighteningly angry — big-screen persona?

Things you should never put on your face

How many beauty products do you use in your skincare and makeup routine? According to The Telegraph, the average woman uses 16 — per day. It's no surprise, then, that the beauty industry is booming.

While these products may be selling at a steady pace — global sales should reach $130 billion by 2019 — that doesn't necessarily guarantee their safety. Believe it or not, cosmetics — including skincare products — are "very lightly regulated" by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to Fortune.

Although cosmetics are required to contain labels, companies can cry "trade secrets" to avoid having to share what they've used. Additionally, anyone who's anyone can sell these products. Steve Xu, a resident physician in the department of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, confirmed to Fortune that no documentation, pre-market approval, or registration is even required. Yikes!

What happens to your body when you give up caffeine

Coffee is glorious. Enjoyed by billions for its miraculous abilities to pick up and wake up, it's a uniter. People in the Middle East like it (Arabica beans!), people in South America like it (Colombian beans!), people in the U.S. like it (there's a Starbucks every 15 feet). But once in a while there comes a time when some poor soul must give up not just coffee, but its active ingredient, caffeine, in all its many forms. And there are good reasons to quit coffee and the like: it can destroy your stomach's lining, deprive you of sleep, or send your blood pressure sky high. Caffeine is a highly addictive substance, and your body goes through quite an ordeal when you try to break that dependence. Here's a look at what happens to your body when you quit consuming coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks.

The truth about anti-aging creams and serums

Anti-aging products make up a huge part of the skincare market. From serums to cream, there are shelves full of topical products making all sorts of claims to reverse or prevent signs of aging. But do these really work? It's hard to believe something as simple as smoothing on a cream can produce any major results. So we talked to three dermatologists to get their take on anti-aging creams and serums and if they actually work — and we have good news! All three unanimously agreed that yes, anti-aging topical products do in fact work. However, there are a few things you should know before purchasing to guarantee real, longer-term results.

Healthy ways to lose weight without dieting

Trying to lose weight is, for most of us, vexing, exhausting, and filled with contradictory information. In a 2016 article published in The New York Times Magazine, author and neuroscientist Sandra Aamodt notes that there's a robust body of research showing that "in the long run dieting is rarely effective, doesn't improve health, and does more harm than good." The crux of the issue, Amodt writes, is the fact that each person has what's referred to as their body's "set point" — a certain weight range that "varies from person to person, [and] is determined by genes and life experience." The brain will engage in all sorts of tactics to bring the dieting body back into its set point range, and this is why diets so often fail.

How to best care for your lady parts in summer

For most of us, summer means sun's out, fun's out. But the heat, humidity, and heavy, clingy, and wet air can be miserable on your body. You sweat. You feel sticky and icky. The elements this time of year can be especially uncomfortable for your lady parts.

There are plenty of annoying and localized skin problems when it gets all sorts of balmy or just straight up hot as all get out. Luckily, there are equally as many techniques and products that allow you to properly care for your lady parts and to remain comfortable and fresh "down there" during the stifling summer months.

These are the signs that you're healthy

In the last ten years or so, I've become increasingly interested in health and wellness. In light of my own health issues, I've wanted to learn as much as I can about how to be as healthy as possible, and how I can assess my own health outside the doctor's office. As it turns out, though, there's a ton of conflicting information out there.

The rise and fall of Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck's Hollywood career has played out like a rollercoaster. After winning an Oscar for Good Will Hunting in 1998, the Boston-raised actor slowly, painfully plummeted to rock bottom (2003's Gigli). Three successful stints as a director have helped reverse his misfortunes, but his high-profile divorce from Jennifer Garner has once again put his future in jeopardy. In light of that scandal, we're taking a look back at his long, but shaky, career as an actor and director.

The real reason Meg Ryan's career was ruined

At one time, Meg Ryan took top billing with classics like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. But over the years, her presence in Hollywood has become pretty much nonexistent. The real question is this: why has the star's career taken such a turn for the worse? Let's look at a few reasons why Meg Ryan might be losing sleep over her career.

Whatever happened to Dolph Lundgren?

In 1985, it took four words—"I must break you"—to rocket Dolph Lundgren to international stardom. As Soviet killing machine Ivan Drago, the towering antagonist of Rocky IV, Lundgren made a serious impression; of course, in the years since, it's been revealed that he only got into movies on a lark, as his Masters' degree in chemical engineering probably would have opened up employment options for him in a different field. Fortunately, Hollywood has been pretty good to him, and if you've ever wondered whatever happened to Dolph, you may be surprised to know that he never really went away—and that, thanks to an old friend, his profile may soon be higher than ever.

What You Didn't Know About Melania Trump

Although Donald Trump has made quite a show for himself, his current wife, Melania, has mostly kept to the background. We're taking a closer look at Trump's right-hand woman, from her childhood, to their first run-in, to their marriage today.

Worst foods to order in a restaurant when you're gluten-free

While there are lots more gluten-free options available in restaurants than even a few years ago, you still need to know what foods present the most challenges, questions to ask, and alternatives to look for if you have a problem digesting gluten. While people with milder gluten intolerance may not notice accidental gluten ingestion, people with celiac disease who need to be on a gluten-free diet to keep their illness in check can get seriously sick from it.

How Meghan Markle is getting in shape for the wedding

Workout regimens and fad diets abound to help brides get in shape for their wedding. Deciding which one to choose is arguably harder than actually losing weight and toning up. Of course, not everyone stresses about getting in shape for their big day. Meghan Markle probably isn't too worried about fitting into her royal wedding gown. Nonetheless, it would be hard to imagine her giving up her fitness routine now.

Lobster Rolls to Eat Before You Die

A roundup of the best lobster rolls from coast to coast.

Lobster rolls are a coastal summer staple. But before we dig into all the deliciousness, let’s take a second to discuss the two distinct styles: Maine and Connecticut. Maine-style is served cold with mayo, while Connecticut-style is served warm with butter. Which is better? We’ll let you be the judge.

The most stunning weight-loss transformations Hollywood has seen

Stars — they really are just like us. For women in Hollywood, the subject of their weight is often a big topic, like it is with the rest of us. And it can be frustrating to carry on a few extra pounds when it affects your quality of life. So for a variety of reasons, health being a major one, a number of plus-sized celebrities have made big transformations in their bodies. Each of them has followed her own path, but all are pretty amazing. Like for Shonda Rhimes — learning how saying yes to things helped her change her body. And for Rosie O'Donnell — she got a real wake-up call thanks to a major health issue. Oprah Winfrey says she has "finally made peace with food." Read on to see how these celebs changed their lives.

The untold truth of Scarlett Johansson

Described by The Times as a "reluctant sex symbol," Scarlett Johansson's name can be easily found on virtually any list of attractive Hollywood stars. The first woman to be crowned Esquire's "Sexiest Woman Alive" twice, Johansson has also been featured as one of People's "Most Beautiful" multiple times throughout her career. She's undeniably gorgeous, sure — but if you think Johansson achieved international superstar success by relying on her appearance, you couldn't be more wrong.

Gross things you should know about McDonald's

No one ever goes to McDonald's thinking they're going to be getting a meal that delicious, tasty, good for you, and that you'll be proud of eating later. It's fast, hot, and it fills the hole. Sometimes, it's even a guilty pleasure. Even so, you expect a restaurant to be putting decent — if not quality — ingredients on your tray, and maintaining a safe, clean facility. That's not always the case, so let's talk about the most cringeworthy things you need to know before you eat at McDonald's again

Bella Hadid Switched Her Naked Red Dress for Skintight Silver Bike Shorts at Cannes

Bella Hadid is at Cannes Film Festival right now, and as well as being spotted kissing her ex-boyfriend, The Weeknd, the model has been rocking some major outfit changes, too.

Appearing yesterday on the red carpet for the Dior dinner at Cannes, Hadid wore a sheer red dress, with one strap worn off-the-shoulder. The skirt section of the dress was completely transparent, while the bodice was reinforced, so that she wasn't quite as naked as Kendall Jenner:

Celebrities who look totally different with their natural hair

Celebrities tend to be style chameleons by nature, changing their looks to suit their latest roles. This means that, somewhere along the way, the celeb sheds their original look. And it all seems to start with the hair! What don't stars do to their coifs? Coloring, cutting, straightening, curling — celebrities tweak their hair more than most people change their sheets. So, when their natural hue or texture makes the occasional cameo, it can, frankly, come as quite the shock.

Life-changing uses for turmeric

If you can only use one spice for the rest of your life, make it turmeric. Its golden, gritty appearance looks intimidating, but it is a gentle, gentle substance. Turmeric hails from India and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine since 500 BCE. It contains an insane amount of antioxidants and also contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Some even say it works better than most over-the-counter medications. Now, we're not saying that turmeric can solve every ailment, but early research shows it may be a promising solution to help with a lot of problems with very few (if any) side effects.

The real reasons why men fall asleep so much faster than women

If you've ever spent one too many nights tossing and turning, you're not alone. According to Harvard Medical School, 60 percent of women don't sleep enough. And what's the only thing worse than staring at the clock all night? Staring at the clock while your restful partner snores next to you. Men have an easier time both falling and staying asleep for a variety of reasons.

Signs you should make an appointment with your gynecologist

It can be intimidating to read about potential health issues. If you're prone to paranoia (and who isn't now that Google has given us the ability to self-diagnose?), you will be convinced that something is wrong even if everything is okay.

In all probability you are just fine, but — in the off-chance that you're not — it's worth taking a few moments to read through this. You could see something that could save your life. Here are some signs that you should make an appointment with your gynecologist.

Why Dressing Nicely for a Flight Is Worth the Effort

When you’re suffering through a long flight in cramped seats the last thing you probably want is to be dressed to the nines, but skipping out on those pajama pants and tank tops does have its advantages. You might even get a better seat.

Celebrity scandals no one was expecting

With so many scandals dominating today's tabloids, it takes something truly shocking to happen in Hollywood for us to be caught off guard. Such was the case for these stories, which touch upon everything from hookers, to extortion attempts and, yes, even shoplifting. Relive these jaw-dropping moments with us now, won't you?

Science proves toned bodies are now sexier than skinny ones

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it seems all the fitness influencers on Instagram have triggered a cultural shift.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City asked 78 female undergraduate students to rate the winners of the Miss USA beauty pageant, and the researchers discovered that women with toned or muscular figures are now seen as sexier as women who are very thin.

Why burpees are king of the bodyweight exercises

If you haven't heard of the burpee exercise, I'm going to assume you've been languishing in a 10-year coma. Glad to have you back.

To catch you up, burpees in their most basic form involve a series of movements that take you from a standing position into a plank position, then back to standing again. Even beginner-level sequences and modifications can be physically taxing, but in the last few years, sadistic personal trainers have gotten a hold of the exercise and turned it into a fast-paced, often varied, plyometric torture mechanism used to brutalize clients into better shape.

Hair mistakes that make you look older

There's nothing quite like a great haircut. That feeling when you can't stop catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror or running your hands through your new layers is priceless. Unfortunately, a bad hairstyle can cut through all that confidence and leave you looking older than you are. The good news is that it's pretty easy to update your look without a lot of time or money. We asked some of our favorite hairstylists to share the biggest mistakes they see women making with their hair — and how to fix them!

Reasons your nails keep breaking

Broken nails have a way of ruining your day fast. We've all been there. You finally grow your nails out and finish them off with a perfect manicure, only to ruin the look when one nail breaks. And then maybe another. Now, the only thing left to do is file them all down (so at least they match) and wait for them to get long again. Talk about frustrating.

Things Meghan Markle can't do after she marries Prince Harry

With all eyes on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's upcoming nuptials, it's pretty easy to forget about all the things that will take place after the big day. Marrying into British royalty is a bit different than becoming a Disney princess. By that we mean there are rules.

What really happens to your body when you have kids

Pregnancy is a crazy time of change for you and your little family. Not only is your body changing before your eyes, but you're actually growing another human being while preparing your outside world for your new addition. Once baby arrives, there will be more changes to come. Sure, you'll be exhausted and a little sore, but the changes go far beyond that. From changes in your hormones to a new shoe size, your body is far from done with changing just because pregnancy is over.

15 Mistakes You're Making When You Wash Your Face

Here's how to get the most out of your twice-a-day cleansing routine.

Washing your face seems pretty simple, right? Splash some water on your face, rub in a little cleanser, and rinse. But to get the most out of your daily cleansing routine, it takes a little more care and consideration. It’s not only how you wash your face that makes the difference, but when, how often, and what type of face wash you use.

This $10 Mascara Held Up Through Beyoncé's Entire Coachella Performance

The world is still reeling from that earth-shattering, history-making Coachella performance that saw BeyoncĂ© dance for two hours straight, reunite Destiny's Child, and become the first black woman to headline the music festival in one fell swoop. And that doesn't even cover her outfits (which were designed by Balmain's Creative Director Olivier Rousteing) or her makeup. We can chalk up some of her glow to the fact that, well, she's BeyoncĂ©, but in an interview with Refinery 29, her longtime makeup artist Sir John shared that a lot of it came from the drugstore.

The Real Reason Hollywood Stopped Casting Halle Berry

In 1989, Halle Berry was living in a homeless shelter in New York City. In 1991, she made her big screen debut in Spike Lee's critically acclaimed Jungle Fever, and in 2002, she became the first black woman to win the Academy Award for best actress for her mesmerizing turn in the slow burn Southern drama Monster's Ball. At the age of 36, Berry was sitting firmly at the top of her profession. So with her acting prowess and a seemingly long career ahead, where did it all go wrong? Let's take a deep dive into why Hollywood isn't infatuated with Berry anymore.

The untold truth of Dr. Pimple Popper

Popaholics are having a moment, thanks in large part to Sandra Lee. The dermatologic and cosmetic surgeon based out of Southern California struck gold — or should we say blackheads? — with her viral pimple popping videos, and made this guilty pleasure a little less guilty.

No longer do popaholics need to feel ashamed of their fascination with skin extractions. Lee, best known as Dr. Pimple Popper, has proven there are many others out there like them with her 3.6 million subscribers on YouTube and 2.7 million followers on Instagram. That's a lot of popaholics! "People were watching under a closet, almost like it was porn, and people are now embracing it," Lee told the Daily Mail.

Signs you're not getting enough protein

As a health-conscious person, you've probably seen it all when it comes to dietary recommendations. Fat is bad. No, wait, it's actually sugar that makes you fat. Bring on the omega 3's!

Protein has become pretty trendy, too. With so many low carb diets out there, protein is filling the gap. "We aren't known as a country that's low in protein," Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D., author of The Flexitarian Diet, told Women's Health. "These days, most of the hot fad diets are very pro-protein."

Even though we're so focused on it, many of us still fall short when it comes to protein intake. Not sure if you're missing out? Read on to see if any of these symptoms sound familiar.

You'd be surprised what the world of science has figured out when it comes to romance. One minute, science is launching Neil Armstrong across the void to walk on the moon. The next, it's telling you exactly how to land your fantasy date. Contrary to popular belief, love and attraction is less like a romance novel, and a whole lot more like a psychology journal. Here's what science says is working behind the scenes when Cupid's arrow strikes.

This 12-Minute Total-Body Workout Will Make You Feel Really Powerful

Let's be honest: Burpees and mountain climbers are probably two of the most disliked exercises of all time. So it's not surprising that these efficient and effective moves make a great addition to a short workout—like the 12-minute one below created by Michael Blauner, a NESTA-certified personal trainer based in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Crazy true facts about Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage definitely isn't the actor you cast as the boring old "everyman" character, but that's exactly why his fan base loves him. While so many people hide their eccentricities from the world, Cage applies his quirky style to every job he takes. He brings the same intensity to every performance, whether he's playing a depressed screenwriter (and his identical twin brother) in an Academy Award-winning film, or screaming about how much he hates bees ("Not the bees! Aggghhh!") in a B-grade horror remake. Say what you will about Nicolas Cage, but that guy never phones it in. Ever.

The Best Detangling Sprays and Conditioners for Curly Hair

In an ideal world showers would be for one thing and one thing only: staring off into space and letting your subconscious take over. But alas, even showers aren't free of their own to-do list, even if it's just the shampoo-condition-body wash-shave checklist. And if you have curly hair, you know that there's a hidden, often very difficult step in between "conditioner" and moving on with your life, and it's detangling your hair.
