10 Hair Color Trends That’ll Be Huge in 2018

After two years of letting our collective Lisa Frank obsession go nuts, 2018 is looking to be a palette cleanser. Which isn't to say the hair color trends celebrity stylists are predicting will be boring—anything but. Moving away from bright neons and golden blonds, prepare to see more icy platinums, rich browns, and more natural-looking colors with added dimension and sneakily bright highlights. "Transitioning closer to the color we were born with will be more popular," says Nicole Leal, master stylist at Nine Zero One. Good news considering the upkeep is much, much more manageable, even if "natural" still does require a couple hours in the chair. Ahead, the hair color ideas we're most excited for in 2018.

Chocolate Brown

Even natural brunettes can learn something from Priyanka Chopra, who upgraded her rich brown hair into a more dimensional chocolate shade. The look came courtesy of Sharon Dorram, master colorist at Sally Hershberger Salon. Dorram says 2018 will be the year of hair color ideas for brunettes, from rich, chocolate brown to warm amber hues. Our crystal ball predicts Chopra's photo cited as inspiration in colorists' chairs all next year.

Platinum Blond

In our opinion, Zoë Kravitz's platinum pixie was the chicest cut of the year. We all know how much upkeep goes into platinum hair, but who could argue that this look wasn't worth it? Pretty much every stylist we've talked to says our bleach obsession will only get stronger next year. "We're going to see even more blonds going bright," says Oscar Blandi.

Cayenne Spice Red

Along with brunettes, it's a big year for redheads too. Even if you're a blond at heart like Emma Roberts, stylists have noticed a shift in requests for red, copper, and auburn hair. This Cayenne Spice shade incorporates blond elements to help usher in the big hair change. Nicole Leal, master stylist at Nine Zero One, has a wish for next year: She wants more women with blue or green eye color and fair skin tones to go copper.

Below-the-Ears Ombré

The gradually blended hair color trend, aka ombré, is here to stay through 2018—with an upgrade. Blandi predicts ombré shades that fade gently from dark to light, for a soft look that's anything but stripey. The caveat: Go for it on a lob, where just a tiny bit of brightness peeks out on your ends. As Jenna Dewan Tatum proves, it's more modern.

Rusty Copper

Warming up a brunette base can make all the difference, as we learned thanks to Solange's red-hued highlights. Try Rusty Copper—a burnished red shade that looks unbelievable on curls—to add even more dimension.

Root Beer

All signs point to 2018 as the year of the brunette. "Root beer hair" is a rich brown with red or auburn highlights, seen on stars like Olivia Munn and Selena Gomez. Experts say this rich, dark look is expected to be popular all year long.

Cream Soda

The beverage hair trend keeps on riding strong, and with it cream soda hair. It's a dirty blond shade perfect for the cooler months when you can't even pretend you just stepped off a sun-kissed beach. The color falls between icy platinum and golden blond, making it versatile enough to last through whatever 2018 brings us. (It's one of the best hair color ideas for blonds we've ever seen.)

Blorange

Lady Gaga has had hair across the rainbow spectrum this year, but she's ending 2017 with a subtle orange tint. This platinum blonde-meets-orange shade, A.K.A. blorange, is a spicier alternative to millennial pink hair.

Mulled Wine

Hello, statement red shades. The mulled wine hair color trend started this winter, but much like that third glass of wine, we plan to be feeling the effects long into 2018. When your whole outfit consists of a sleeping bag coat and the biggest scarf you can find, a few locks of deep, burgundy red can brighten up your look—and your mood—as much as one of Jaclyn Hill's highlighters.

Blauburn

With browns and reds on the rise, we expect to see blondes adding some flavor to their honey hues next year. Meet Blauburn: a hybrid of blond and auburn that's not quite as ginger as Cayenne Spice. Take Olivia Wilde, for example, who shows us that you can pack a lot of color into a short style.
