I Read a Book to See If It Could Stop Me From Being Hungry All The Time
All calories are not created equal.
I am always hungry. Okay, maybe not always, but the idea of food always sounds good—and it's hard to differentiate the two. Meanwhile, my dresses are increasingly strained across my hips. So when I encountered the textbook-size (and, in that it's packed with charts, history, and recipes, the textbook-like) Always Hungry?, by Harvard endocrinologist, nutritionist, and pediatrician David Ludwig, MD, PhD, well, that damn book stared me right in the thighs.
Ludwig's
philosophy is that by "ignoring calories and targeting fat tissue
directly"—with a low-carb diet based on "good fats," legumes, nonstarchy
vegetables, and a wide array of proteins (which, as a
lactose-intolerant vegetarian, is right up my alley)—you can reprogram
"fat cells to release their stored calories…shifting metabolism into
weight-loss mode" and eventually find your healthy set point, i.e., the
weight your body "wants" to be.
Everything You Need to Know About Drinkable Collagen
The fountain of youth is real.
source:elle.com
According to new research published in this month's Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology,
women who incorporated a collagen peptide drink into their daily
routine improved the look of skin after just eight weeks. Dermal
collagen density significantly increased and fragmentation of the dermal
collagen network significantly decreased. But that's not all: Both
effects persisted after 12 weeks.
A
little skin science 101: Collagen (the word is derived from the Greek
kolla, which means "glue") is the most abundant protein in the human
body. The main component of connective tissue, it cements cells together
and gives skin its structure and elasticity. Collagen production begins
to decline at a rate of about 1 percent a year in our mid-twenties and
goes rapidly downhill in our forties and fifties, with the majority of
women experiencing a 30 percent drop in the first few years
post-menopause. This is a natural process, but it's also aggravated by
sun exposure. The effects we see in the mirror? Dryness, sagginess,
dullness, and loss of plumpness.

Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet
Protein:
Essential to the building, maintenance, and repair of body tissue such as the skin, the internal organs, and muscle, proteins are the major components of our immune system and hormones. When choosing protein-rich foods, pay attention to what else you are getting with that choice (i.e. choices high in saturated fat known to raise blood cholesterol putting us at risk of heart disease and stroke). Vegetable sources of protein, such as beans, nuts, and whole grains are great choices and offer healthy fiber, vitamins and minerals. The best animal protein choices are fish and poultry; however, for those partial to red meat, you should stick with the leanest cuts, choose moderate portion sizes, and make it only an occasional part of your diet. How much protein should you eat? The amount of protein you need depends on many factors including age, sex, and level of physical activity. The WHO (World Health Organization) set the minimum protein intake at about 1/3 of a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Following is a chart from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) June 2011 recommended daily amounts.

What is Healthy Eating? What is a Healthy Diet?
Healthy eating means consuming the right quantities of foods from all food groups in order to lead a healthy life.
Diet is often referred to as some dietary regimen for losing weight. However, diet simply means what food we eat in the course of a 24-hour, one week, or one month, etc. period.
A good diet is a nutritional lifestyle that promotes good health. A good diet must include several food groups because one single group cannot provide everything a human needs for good health.
Prof. Daniela Jakubowicz and team stressed that when we eat our food may matter as much as what we eat.
According to the USDA (United States Dept. of Agriculture)2,
we should consume at least 3 ounces of whole grains per day. A whole
grain, unlike refined grains, still has the bran and the germ attached.
Whole grains are rich in fiber, minerals and vitamins. When grains are refined the bran and germ are removed.
It is not possible to know whether food is made from whole grain just by looking at it.
To be really sure you have to read the label. In the list of ingredients, the word whole or wholegrain needs to appear before the name of the grain.
Whole grain products include breads, pastas and cereals - they need to be made with 100% whole grain.
Whole grain foods and flours include 100% whole wheat, brown rice, bulger, corn, buckwheat, oatmeal (oats), spelt and wild rice.

When we eat matters too
A large breakfast helps control body weight - a team of researchers from Tel Aviv University, Israel, explained in the journal Obesity that a big breakfast - one containing about 700 calories - is better for losing weight and lowering one's risk of developing heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes.1
Prof. Daniela Jakubowicz and team stressed that when we eat our food may matter as much as what we eat.
How do you define healthy eating?
The crucial part of healthy eating is a balanced diet. A balanced diet - or a good diet - means consuming from all the different good groups in the right quantities. Nutritionists say there are five main food groups - whole grains, fruit and vegetables, protein, diary, and fat & sugar.

10 Easy Ways to Get Your Body, Skin and Health on Track Post-NYE
source: harpersbazaar.com
The past month of
late-night parties, cocktails and cookies has come to a close and now
it's time to hit the reset button. No need to spend hours at the gym or
start an intense diet, though—just follow these easy tips from top health experts.
1) Make taking off your morning-after makeup even easier.
Swap out your regular face wash for an oil cleanser. Oils gently
dissolve even long-wear makeup, cleanse the face, and improve barrier
function of the skin all in a single step. It's so easy, you'll stop
"forgetting" to wash your face before bed. We like Julep Love your Bare Face Age-Defying Cleansing Oil.
2) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Then hydrate some more. "Maintaining
hydration levels will help you quickly eliminate toxins in the body,
particularly from alcohol," says Amanda Foti, Senior Dietitian for Selvera Wellness.
3) When water isn't enough, revisit a childhood drink.
After a night of celebrating with alcohol and sugary party treats, "I
recommend drinking Pedialyte," says Dr. Sobel, dermatologist and founder
of DDF Skincare. "It has nutrients that will help the body retain water without puffiness and rehydrate your body."
4) Make small diet changes to get your body back on track. Foti
tells us, "for the average healthy individual, detoxifying mechanisms
exist right in their own organs. Our bodies are very efficient at
pulling out the toxins and excreting them as necessary." However, after
weeks of forsaking healthy eating in favor of calorie-filled holiday
favorites, you can find yourself struggling to get back into a normal
pattern. "Following a juice cleanse for one to two days or incorporating
a shake or herbal tea every morning can work to mentally kick start
these changes," advises Foti.
5) Try planks for a flatter belly faster.
The full-body plank is a simple but challenging move you can do
anywhere. "Among other benefits, it helps eliminate belly bloat," says
David Kirsch, Celebrity Trainer and Author of Ultimate Family Wellness.
6) Moisturize smarter.
"People think the heavier the cream the better, but they cause
blemishes in the attempt to rehydrate" explains Dr. Sobel. In fact,
"moisture creams work by helping to hold water in the skin. They must be
applied to damp skin in order to see any significant increase in
hydration."
7) Do yoga, even if you feel like you can't. "The key to yoga as a hangover helper is to heal the places the alcohol has attacked," explains Lauren Imparto in her new book Retox: Yoga*Food*Attitude.
She suggests a Kidney Relief Backbend while seated in a chair: "Place
your hands by your sides or on the chair behind you. Inhale, lift your
chest. Exhale, find a backbend in your middle and lower back. Breathe
into your kidneys and optionally drop your head back. Hold three to ten
breaths."
8) Replenish potassium.
After a night out, your body has likely lost a lot of its nutrients
due to the diuretic effects of alcohol. Eat foods that cater to your
needs, "Bananas, a boiled or baked potato or an avocado sprinkled with
salt can all do the trick and will be gentle on your upset stomach,"
advises Imparto.
9) Pop a supplement. Nerium's EHT Age-Defying Supplement
contains a mixture of bioactive molecules isolated from coffee and
helps to maintain and enhance healthy neuron connections in the brain.
Strengthening these neuronal connections promotes better cognitive
function and brain health, enhances the body's natural energy stores,
and boosts the immune system.
10) Get motivated to work out by booking discounted fitness classes. Dibs,
a new NYC- based platform, is launching in the new year and promises to
help you find classes at lower prices using an algorithm that takes
into account real-time demand. Expect lower class rates when you book in
advance, for less popular class times or in inclement weather.

7 Ways Rosie Huntington Whiteley Stays Super-Model Fit

In an interview with The Daily Mail
promoting her new fitness collection — Rosie for Autograph Active —
actress / model / designer Rosie Huntington Whitely got specific about
just how she maintains her world-famous body.
1. She constantly mixes up her routine at the gym.
"I
find that alternating work outs and mixing interval, low and high
intensity training really helps," Rosie told the Daily Mail. "I love to
mix in Pilates and fun dance classes too."

"If you're short on time try skipping – I love it as it gets the heart rate up immediately and works out so many parts of your body. It's a great cardio alternative that also helps tone at the same time."

3. She never trains alone.
Rosie recommends finding a gym partner, trainer, or instructor who really inspires you and can help motivate you to get your butt to the gym in the morning.

"Never miss meals for the sake of saving calories," she says. "Breakfast is really important for me and sets me up for the day."

Rosie usually goes for a high-protein breakfast of eggs and spinach before the gym, then drinks a fresh green smoothie after she works out. That's a green smoothie. Not a green juice. Green juice is just fancy sugar water. If you want the full nutritional benefits of all those fruits and veggies, smoothies made with whole foods and no added sweeteners are the way to go.

Rosie is not about that take-out / frozen food life. "I'm a real foodie but when I'm at home I try and cook very nutritious, organic and basic foods and when I'm out I'll enjoy myself, but try and make healthy choices."

7. She doesn't worry about "water weight."
Rosie always tries to drink 8 cups of water every day before lunch, especially if she has a lingerie shoot or red carpet event. "I try to avoid carbs [in those cases] and try to drink as much water as I can to keep hydrated."
