HOW TO WAKE UP WITH GORGEOUS HAIR EVERY MORNING

Tips for a chic look that'll take you from your first cup of coffee, all the way to cocktails.

A.M. hair can be unpredictable—you never know what you'll see when you turn on the bathroom light. On a hectic morning, the last thing you want to worry about is your hair. We asked expert stylists how to wake up with strands that are work-ready (and troubleshoot if they're not).

1) Don't sleep with damp hair. Sure, the old go-to-bed-with-a-wet-bun trick delivers perfect waves for some women, but for others, the results can be dicey. "If you care what your hair looks like in the morning, don't sleep with it wet," says celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko. "If you're planning to put it in a ponytail or braid, it's great, but if you want to wear it down, let it air-dry if you can. Otherwise you'll end up using heat styling to fix it in the morning, which takes more time and effort," Plus, the less you rely on heated styling tools, the healthier your hair will be.
2) Smooth before you snooze. "Apply a serum at night to detangle before you go to bed," says Kevin Mancuso, Global Creative Director for Nexxus New York Salon Care. "In the morning, your hair will be softer and more flexible." Rub a lightweight product like Nexxus New York Salon Care Encapsulate Serum, which is made with a nutrient-rich blend of protein and conditioning oil, onto dry hair then brush it through.
3) Use the right brush. An easy fix for frizz and flyaways: use a mixed-bristle brush. "AMason Pearson is great for that," says Polko. "Start with short strokes at the ends and work your way up to the mid-shaft, so that you're not just pushing a knot down to the bottom. Your hair will come back to life as you brush that frizz out." For a less expensive mixed-bristle brush, try the Sonia Kashuk Hair Brush.
4) Scrunch your curls. To refresh flat or droopy curls, just spritz 'em in the a.m. "Spray curls with water and squeeze them in an upward motion to revitalize the shape," says Lona Vigi, a celebrity stylist in Los Angeles for Nexxus New York Salon Care. "To add shine, scrunch on a little Nexxus New York Salon Care Oil Infinite Nourishing Hair Oil." Then don't touch your hair until it's dry—messing with damp ringlets can lead to frizz.
5) Sport an accessory. "If your hair is not cooperating, stick in a hair accessory on one side and leave the rest down," says Polko. Make a deep side part, then smooth back the hair below the part with a brush. Add an oversized barrette or a few metallic bobby pins like H&M Hair Pins in gold. Simple and chic.
6) Pump up the volume. For flat hair that needs a quick wakeup call, boost body at the roots. "To get more volume, spray Nexxus New York Salon Care Hydra-Light Root Lifting Mistall over the base of your hair—you can even put it on while the hair is dry," says Mancuso. After you spritz, use a round brush and a blow-dryer on a low heat setting to lift the roots.
7) Sidestep creases. To prevent hair dents in the morning, "weave hair into a loose braid instead of a ponytail before bed," says Mancuso. "You'll have beautiful movement when you take it down."  To hold onto that natural texture, spritz a touchable hairspray like Nexxus New York Salon Care Comb-Thru Touchable Hold Finishing Mist. Another way to avoid unwelcome a.m. surprises: Switch to a silk pillowcase. It's less damaging to the hair because it reduces friction, and therefore breakage. Plus, the smooth surface helps to protect your style. Try Slip Silk Pillowcase, a worthy hair investment that'll last.
8) Pin your bangs. If your bangs tend to become unruly overnight, try clipping them before you hit the sack. "Grab a couple bobby pins that you've used before so that they're not too tight and pin your bangs off to the side," says Polko. "In the morning, blow-dry and shake them into place." Presto, perfect fringe.
9) When all else fails, rock a ponytail. It's a 10-second style that you can wear anywhere. Whether you opt for a high pony or go with a low version, Vigi suggests using a mixture of gel and oil to create the perfect amount of sleekness. "Rub the mixture between your palms, apply it to the hair and brush it back," she says. Tie on an elastic then proceed to have a fabulous day.
