Unlike some of the kids in my elementary school art class who were blessed with real skills, coloring in the lines was never one of my strong suits. Even today, I’ll admit that I’m still perfectly awful at it. But, hey, is it really necessary that I stay within the lines if I’m coloring every commercial break while I absentmindedly devour Keeping Up With The Kardashians reruns? I didn’t think so.
Nails, on the other hand, are a completely different story. Unlike coloring books, which you can mess up as much as you’d like and no one would ever judge you for your shading skills (or lack thereof), painting your nails requires surgeon-like precision — even if you skip the nail art. Given my history with coloring, you can only imagine what my nails — and cuticles! — regularly look like after a fresh coat of polish. Toss an oxblood-colored polish into the mix, and it basically looks like I committed a crime.
Luckily, celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann let me in on a little trick she has for avoiding getting polish everywhere besides your physical nail plate, and it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. Literally. According to the nail pro, three swipes is all it should take you to completely saturate the top of your nails with color. Lippmann suggests painting a stripe straight down the center of your nail, then following up with two separate stripes to the left and right of the first one, instead of twenty or so tiny brush strokes. Hint: If you haven’t covered your entire nail after this, you’re doing it wrong. Lock in the shade of your choice with a final swipe of polish, positioning the tip of the brush flat against the spot where your nails meet your cuticles, then drag the color across your nails and voilĂ — the skin surrounding your nails remains untouched.
