HOW TO KEEP YOUR MAKEUP IN PLACE AND YOUR SKIN DEWY

On New Year's Eve, in a fit of frustration after 30 minutes spent attempting to get Ziggy Stardust-blue cream eye shadow to stay in place through blinking and run-ins with overgrown bangs, I closed my eyes and blasted my face with strong-hold hairspray. Did it work? You bet. But I paid for immovable shadow and foundation with dry, tight, matte skin—and in the winter? Never again. 

Of course, that's the extreme route. My everyday approach to setting my makeup involves a fluffy brush and some loose powder, though even that can accentuate flakiness and dullness. But it's freezing, my skin hasn't seen the sun in ages, that's life...or so I thought before this finishing balm found me. I was skeptical—not because I don't love a balm but because everything that makes one such is exactly what makes it an impractical setting product—and yet, it works. Buff the velvety, white balm over your made-up face with the mini Kabuki brush (there's a sponge, too, but it doesn't work as well) and the effect is close to a low-level blurring, smoothing filter that follows you around all day without budging and oh, also imparts a hydrated, glowy finish. Bottom line: Have your cake. Eat it, too.
