SHOULD YOU DITCH MAKEUP REMOVER?

How to cleanse your skin at night.

Question: Do I need to use makeup remover before my cleanser or is it just an extra, unnecessary step?
Answer: Skip makeup remover and wash your face twice instead, recommends Dr. Lamees Hamdan, creator of Shiffa Dubai skin care. "There's always residue left on the skin after the first wash and cleanser is gentler and more effective than makeup remover, which can have drying alcohols," says Hamdan. Plus, she adds, the emulsifiers used in some makeup removers can clog pores if they're not completely washed off, which is often the case when you just use a wipe after a long night and then go straight to bed. The exception? Stubborn waterproof eye makeup. Sleeping in leftover mascara can lead to puffiness and infection; the best way to get it off is to press—not swipe—a cotton ball soaked in gentle, fragrance-and-alcohol-free remover (we love Simple Eye Make-up Remover) down on your lids to dissolve makeup, then wash it off with water.
